As a Latin teacher, my reflex is to say “diplomae.” But that’s probably not it, since diploma actually means “doubled” as in “folded.” It’s a participle (a verb used as a noun.) It’s actually greek, from δίπλωμα (therefore “a thing doubled.”)

So “diplomas” is an acceptable plural, and I’ll let you get away with “diplomae” (you could argue either.) But the most proper plural in my opinion is “diplomata.”

Answer: $1.00

Now you’re going to see a big variation here, and the math is way too complex to answer in one sentence. Good looking cards should cost $1 apiece, but $1.25 is not uncommon; and quite often it may say $0.80 but only come with an unnecessary sheet of tissue paper (or two) which costs $0.50 a sheet! I saw one the other day that had “95 cents apiece” in big letters, and then when you do the math it was actually $1.65! That’s what salesmen do–they package things until you can’t see the real price. Since I don’t work like that and I want to encorage the industry to be honest, I’ll say I’ve rarely seen an invitation so nice that 50 of them costs the student more than $50.

On the back end, there can be a variance based on

how thick the paper is,

how many you get,

which invitation you choose,

from which brand, and

how rushed your printer is;

but don’t ever let anyone get away with telling you these things substantially affect YOUR price.

No, rich schools don’t spend more. I say that because people say “okay, $1, I get it, but I go to _________, where our school pride makes us only get the best!” No, $1 is for the best–elaborately foil stamped, 80 pound paper of a fine fabric, etc. The press I use (and there are only a few in the country) also prints certificates for the Supreme Court.

Call me if you have any questions. (415) 827-5630.
